ENROLLMENT
WHEN AM I ELIGIBLE TO ENROLL?
Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): The IEP is a seven-month period that begins three months before the month you turn 65, includes the month you turn 65, and ends three months after the month you turn 65. If you're eligible for Medicare due to a disability, your IEP is the seven-month period that starts three months before your 25th month of receiving Social Security Disability benefits.
General Enrollment Period (GEP): If you didn't enroll in Medicare during your IEP and you're not eligible for a Special Enrollment Period, you can enroll during the GEP, which runs from January 1 to March 31 each year. However, if you enroll during the GEP, your coverage won't start until July 1 of that year, and you may be subject to late enrollment penalties.
Special Enrollment Period (SEP): If you have a qualifying life event, such as moving to a new state or losing employer-sponsored health coverage, you may be eligible for a SEP. The SEP allows you to enroll in or make changes to your Medicare coverage outside of the standard enrollment periods.
